Contests with Deadlines

It has gotten too hectic for me to keep up with writing contests. There is a lot of work & time involved in finding good ones, posting them, then deleting them afterwards. So I am going to send you to a few sites that have contests of all kinds. You will have to filter through them to find essay/journaling contests. I recommend subscribing to their newsletters for more contest listings.

Annual & Ongoing Contests

Bulwer-Lytton - annual deadline April 15-June 30 - The worst opening sentence wins in this fun and funny contest.

Annie Dillard Award for Creative Non-fiction - annual deadline Mar 15, 2005 - $1,000 cash prize and possbile publication.

Preservation Foundation - ongoing with annual deadline of Sept 30 - Non-fiction, travel and fiction writers who make less than $500 a year with their creative writing.

Writer's Journal - new contest every two months - Poetry, travel and fiction. On the 'Write To Win' page, there are opening sentences to use as prompts.

A Cup of Comfort - ongoing - $500 prize for best story for each volume, and $100 to all others published.

Byline Magazine - ongoing - Three or four competitions every month in all genres.

Late Night with David Letterman - ongoing - Fill in the blanks for a Top 10 List and win a prize!

Funds for Writers - annual - Themed contest
